Spear of Destiny
Spear of Destiny: the Kaiseki is an RPG set in the world taken by dark powers. Your protagonist roams the fields infested by the evil warriors, to defeat them and go through. Download Spear of Destiny: the Kaiseki for PlayStation 4 to learn what’s next!
Graphics (2/5)
The developers were obviously inspired by Dark Souls when making it. The game features a similarly looking warrior, shown from behind, in a third-person perspective. Alas, that’s all the games share. There is nothing as cinematic as what we love Dark Souls for. There is mostly just a field with some villages, crossed with rivers, and the camera always following the protagonist.
Gameplay (2/5)
Though the description promotes the story of liberating the world from the evil powers, there is hardly one percent of that epic story that appears on the screen. You control a samurai-like character that runs through fields and sometimes encounter enemies he has to fight. Then here comes a swordfight, and on you go again.
When it comes to combat, the scene in the field is bordered by red stains in the air that remains until someone dies. Then, after winning, you go on to see some village or river (you just walk on water, heh, when you have to cross it!) It makes some players think it’s all a joke or a parody.
The game might have caused a big controversy if it was a little better known. In fact, most users think of Wolfenstein series when they hear “Spear of Destiny.” So, they just leave the page on learning that it’s not the game they are looking for.
Controls (2/5)
Though the movement part is made quite decently, the combats are a problem. First of all, the response time is too long. Second, the moves available are not what you might expect. For example, blocking hardly reduces any damage you get; and using various attack modes looks just the same. It’s hard to get used to it (if you are into this at all).
Replay Value (2/5)
Probably you might want to replay it to see how much further this nightmare can go. The dullest combats? Okay. Familiar assets? That’s fine too. But what about the protagonist just walking on water? Or using a shield that doesn’t shield at all? Alas, the game is too plain to contain too many elements like this. So hardly you will replay it even for the sake of a good laugh.
The Bottom Line
Spear of Destiny: the Kaiseki is not the Spear of Destiny old school gamers hoped to see on PS4. It’s quite a basic RPG pretending to be a budget version of Dark Souls, though, in fact, it looks like a mockbuster by Troma or The Asylum. It takes a very special mood to enjoy it, but if you are in search of something wild, you’ve found it.
