Super Meat Boy Review: Hit That Super Meat Boy

Super Meat Boy is an indie platformer telling the story of the Meat Boy saving his girlfriend Bandage Girl from the evil Dr. Fetus. The names tell how unleashed and indie the game is, hard and trashy. Download Super Meat Boy for PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Windows, OS X, Linux, Nintendo Switch or Wii.

Graphics (4/5)

It’s a 2D platformer, and not of those with perfect visuals; Super Meat Boy is rather focused on the gameplay. Nevertheless, the landscape is impressive, and the traps are terrifying. As for the protagonist, a meat cube that leaves a bloody trace wherever he touches, he symbolizes the hardness of the game. The trace may get you annoyed, but it’s not the hardest thing in this game.

Gameplay (5/5)

It’s one of the hardest platformers ever released. At each level you need to save the Bandage Girl from Dr. Fetus’s hands; as abstract as the characters get, the absurd names just tell how imaginary this world is. The dangers for the protagonist, though, are real, and so are the nerves you spend on passing through.

The Meat Boy can walk right or left, jump, or move down. There are combinations for a longer leap, sometime necessary. When the Meat Boy touches the vertical wall, he sticks to it for a moment, so he can jump further at that moment. With this limited weaponry, you’ll have to show great inventiveness to pass levels.

Each world of the game contains 20 levels. When you have passed 17 of them, you can reach the boss. This is an especially hard level, given that Super Meat Boy isn’t easy at all. There are also Easter eggs: if you collect bandages on levels, you can unlock characters from other games, including Minecraft.

Controls (5/5)

Even on PC the developers warn you that it’s better to play it with a gamepad. In fact, it is. The game has perfect response, and you can use buttons as well as the left joystick to move your character. Combination of triggers and buttons is not obvious, but once you have mastered them, it will be alright. Anyway, there won’t be any combos needed; it’s rather about timing and quick response.

Replay Value (5/5)

Super Meat Boy has about 300 levels, and hardly will you pass most of them immediately. It’s more probable you will spend endless tries on many of them, getting more and more eager to finally make it. But when you’re finally through, you may want to replay it and improve your result. When you pass a level at its default difficulty, you enter harder “dark levels”, harder versions of those you’ve passed.

The Bottom Line

Super Meat Boy is a modern classic of such an old genre as platformer. It’s still wildly popular due to its challenging difficulty.

Conclusion

If you like platformers, and you get energized by anger at some unpassable levels, download Super Meat Boy – it’s the right kind of game for you.
