The Surge Review: The Cyborg Survival Story

The Surge is a futuristic RPG set in the cybernetic world. Your hero, a cybernetically enhanced man, cannot understand after the operation, why people and robots are together against him now. And it will take lots of fighting to discover, Download The Surge for PS4, Xbox One, or Windows, and uncover the secret!

Graphics (5/5)

It’s a third-person perspective 3D action game, showing you both your character and his opponents, so you can view anything in cinema mode. The designers applied tons of imagination, though the initial inspiration by Avatar is as strong as the attempt to go as far from Dark Souls as possible. It doesn’t work: the revelation is in the mechanics. Still the game is well-drawn.

Gameplay (4/5)

The story begins for your character on the first day he works for the CREO corporation. An accident leaves him paralyzed below the waist, and parts of his body are replaced by electronic prosthetics. But when he comes to after the operation, the world has changed. The robots he used to work with are now trying to kill him, and nobody gives a clue why.

The lack of information, the perspective, the fighting system, and other details remind Dark Souls or lots of DS-inspired games after. But there are original moments as well. Everything about exoskeletons is fun: you can upgrade your robot part to a certain extent, taking your trophies from the enemies. They fit; don’t care about compatibility! And they produce various effects on you.

There are also operative centers (operating just like fires in Dark Souls), long quests from one place to another, and hard fights with almost no firearms. On the other hand, these fights let you collect the loot off your enemy. But it requires precise hits, in order not to damage them. If it reminds you of anything, we know. And it’s not the only reminiscence.

Controls (4/5)

The game is released for consoles and PC, so it’s well adapted for both keyboard and mouse and gamepad controlling. You’ll need both sticks and the D-pad along with other buttons and triggers to cover all the variants of movement. The fight system, though, is rather complicated, and even reading the manual won’t save you from surprises.

Replay Value (4/5)

It’s an open world game, so you don’t have to stick to missions; you just may wander around, looking for loot and stuff. Side missions are not half as interesting as the detective narrative you want to unfold on your main quest, so hardly they will attract you. On the other hand, the overall ambience delivers something to relive, so you will return.

The Bottom Line

The Surge, despite its hi-tech aesthetics, bears more similarity to Dark Souls than it seems. If you don’t mind the familiar mechanics married to futuristic sci-fi, you’ll enjoy The Surge. Still, it lacks original approach to suit upgrades and resources. On the other hand, the visuals are alright, so are the combats.

Conclusion

If you want Dark Souls sort of techno-remixed, you’ll appreciate The Surge, built completely on that. Download The Surge for Windows, Xbox One, or PlayStation 4.
